We are Mbuso and Christine and together we run XCape Volunteers.
After we met, we quickly felt that we both have the same drive to make a change, the same dreams and aspirations. So we did not only decide to build a life together but also create hope for others and give back to the local community.
We already started a Surf school that includes local surfers as coaches to support them by paying them a fair fee. We also added “Surf + Donate” program, in which our customers can book a surf lesson that includes a small donation to support those local surfers to compete nationally and internationally.
It’s our dream to also include surfing in our volunteer program but that’s the next step.
About Christine
I started to volunteer in Cape Town in March 2024 and fell in love with it. My life’s purpose shifted immediately and my life started to prepare me for my new goal: giving back. I was missing the purpose of my job as a project manager for commercials, so I started to build knowledge on the side:
I gained a certificate in “Early Childhood Development: Global Strategies for Implementation” (EdX Harvard) and another one in “Fundraising and Development Foundations” (UC Davis). I started to pursue my own vision.
“Just” working at a pre-school felt like it’s “not enough”, I wanted more. I wanted to bring hope and sustainable opportunities to those kids and help them gain a new perspective to life.
As one person alone, that’s a very hard thing to accomplish. So it was my dream to create a bigger space that can actually make a difference. Long term.
About Mbuso
I come from a township myself, I grew up in Vrygrond, close to Muizenberg. When I was a kid, I joined a volunteer program that supports kids from townships and takes them surfing. I was one of those kids. Through their work I managed to find a way out of the township, get into surfing and become a professional surfer. I even became store manager of a local surf shop.
It has always been my dream to help at least one kid out of the township.
